“I Did It M̶y̶ His Way” A Wayfinder vs. A Waymaker
There is a difference between a Wayfinder and a Waymaker. As men, we often fancy ourselves as “self-made,” Frank Sinatra-esque “Did it my way” kind of guys. We are tough, boot strap, gladiators that don’t need any help, and never check a map or ask for directions. The only problem is most men are completely lost, and have no idea how to get back on track.
The poet William Ernest Henley wrote in his classic work Invictus, “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” It sounds great, but it is a surefire way to make a mess of your life. True IMPACT Players understand that they need to be Wayfinders, not Waymakers. No man has the power of the Almighty King Jesus.
“Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters...” Isaiah 43:16 (ESV).
Peter and the disciples were manly men of the sea, but after watching Jesus calm a raging storm, they asked this thought-provoking question, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Matthew 8:27. The answer is simple - Jesus is the Waymaker. Jesus doesn’t just know the way, He is the Way. The Way to Heaven. The Way to Salvation. The Way to Peace. The Way to Joy. The Way to Purpose. The Way out of your current circumstances and into the place you long to be.
Jesus has a destination for your life, He has prepared a purpose, a plan, and a course for you to follow. You may feel like Thomas who asked Jesus, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” John 14:5. Sometimes we do not know where God is taking us, so it is difficult to know how to get there. Listen to the Waymaker’s answer, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. In all things, Jesus is leading you to the Father, to the truth, to a fulfilling and everlasting life, and if you will look to Him, He will not only show you the way, He will make the way.
Are you trying to make it on your own? Are you too proud to ask for help, or look at the map for directions? Do you feel lost or unsure about how to proceed through your current circumstances?
